Deparaffinized liver tissue sections were stained for 1 h in 0.1% (w/v) Sirius red (Sigma-Aldrich) in a saturated aqueous solution of picric acid and then rinsed for 30 min in 0.01 N acetic acid to remove unbound dye. For semi-quantitative analysis of liver fibrosis, 10 fields from each slide were randomly selected under a light microscope and the red-stained area per total area (mm2/mm2) was measured using the Image-Pro Plus 4.5.1 system.
