We defined synchronous metastases as metastases diagnosed within 12 months of primary tumor diagnosis and a positive surgical margin as the presence of tumor cells within 1 mm of the transection line. Primary tumors were staged according to the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, eighth edition.22
