The main investigation included a single-item assessment of overall mental health. Participants were asked to rate their average level of “Taha hinengara (mental health) … Thoughts, feelings and emotions” in the past four weeks on a scale from 1 (Very Low) to 10 (Very High). Higher scores on this item indicate better past-month overall mental health. This item was designed as a brief index of overall well-being for use in the main investigation. The psychometric properties of this item have yet to be evaluated; however, its significant associations with other established indices of well-being in this study (i.e., FS and K10) support its validity. We included this item as an adjunct to these other well-being measures.
