At the end of each experiment, animals were transcardially perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde, and the spinal cord and brainstem were removed and post-fixed for 48 h. Verification of a complete C1 transection was determined by post-hoc analysis of sagittal spinal cord sections (100 μm thick) through the lesion epicenter using a stereomi-croscope (magnification x10).
