Participant's exercise self‐determination was assessed by the Chinese version of Behavioural Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire–3 (BREQ‐3) that consists of 24 items and six subscales (amotivation, external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, integrated regulation and intrinsic regulation) with rating on a 5‐point Likert scale (0 = not true for me, 4 = very true for me). The mean scores of each subscale ranged from 0 to 4 with a higher score indicate a greater extent of each motivation type. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for each subscale was greater than 0.8 (Wilson et al., 2006). In our study, the Cronbach's alpha coefficient for each subscale ranged from 0.60 (amotivation) to 0.79 (external regulation).
