For all continuous variables, normality was tested before between-group comparative analyses using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Normally distributed data were analyzed using parametric tests, and nonnormally distributed data were analyzed using nonparametric tests when possible. Normality was also assessed through the examination of histograms and quantile–quantile plots through the ggplot2 package (24).
