Anxiety was tested on the elevated plus-maze apparatus described previously [43]. The apparatus is made of a black acrylic sheet. Four arms (12 in long and 3 in wide) are connected and elevated to a height of 16 in from the floor. Mice were placed on the central platform facing an open arm and allowed to explore the maze for 6 min. The surface was cleaned with 70% EtOH to remove permeated odors by previous animals after each trial. Behavior in the elevated plus maze was recorded for 6 min using a CCD camera. The time spent in the open arm and the number of total arm entries were determined. Arm entry was defined as 50% of the body being positioned within the arm.
