Cell lines and tissue culture

The generation of the human cervical carcinoma C33A-2D2 subclone was previously described.²² Cells were maintained in Eagle’s medium essential medium (EMEM) supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS), 2mM glutamine, 500units/ml penicillin and 500μg/ml streptomycin and grown at 37°C and 8% CO₂. The mouse myoblast cell line C2C12 was grown in Dulbecco’s modified eagle medium (DMEM) supplemented with 5% FBS, 2mM glutamine, 500units/ml penicillin and 500μg/ml streptomycin and grown at 37°C and 8% CO₂. To avoid depletion of the myoblastic population, C2C12 cells were not allowed to grow to confluence and were passaged at a density less than 70%.
