Trained phlebotomists obtained the samples according to a standardized protocol. The whole-blood specimens were stored under appropriate (−70 °C) conditions until analysis. The manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and Se concentrations in the whole blood were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ELAN® DRC II, PerkinElmer Norwalk, Fairfield, CT, USA). Detailed instructions on the measurements are available from the laboratory procedure manual on the NHANES website [12]. For all of the metals included in this study, concentrations below the limit of detection (LOD) were substituted with the method LOD divided by the square root of 2 (Table S1). If the LODs differed between the two survey cycles, we selected the highest of the three and replaced any values below. The NHANES quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) protocols meet the 1988 Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act mandates.
