The independent variable in this study was serum TC. The dependent variable was lumbar spine BMD measured by the dual-energy x-ray (DEXA) scans. The following variables were included in final analysis as covariates: age, race, physical activity, education, body mass index (BMI), triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, serum phosphorus, serum calcium, serum potassium, alkaline phosphatase, LDL cholesterol, phosphorus intake, and protein intake. The examination parts related to clinical and laboratory evaluations were all carried out by well-trained medical experts.
