The second station focused on visualizing the needle tip in its entirety using an in-plane ultrasound approach. The participants in this station practiced this skill by identifying a target on a low-fidelity model. The critical actions required at this station included: describing the needle trajectory prior to insertion, identifying the needle tip upon entry into the “skin,” readjusting the ultrasound if the needle tip was not identified, demonstrating visualization of the entire shaft of the needle throughout procedure, and accurately reaching an identified target. The participant needed to complete all critical actions to pass this station.
