We used medication treatment data from HDCD for distinguishing severity levels of the disease. From the combinations of the three main types of drugs (NSAID, steroid, immuno-suppressant)30 and from the time delay between the drug obtainment and the clinical diagnosis of RP, we grouped the observed RP cases into four progression levels. Patients in the study population were classified according to the level of the most severe case in their history in HDCD.

Since HDCD is available for the years 2010–2013, it provides information for the end of the histories of n=211 individuals, which corresponds to 90.6% of the confirmed RP population.
