The 4 μm mouse kidney sections were paraformaldehyde-fixed and paraffin-embedded for PAS and ACSS2 immunohistochemical staining. The PAS staining was quantified as positive area per glomerulus area using ImageJ software (NIH), which was also used to evaluate the percentage of glomerular mesangial expansion as previously described (38).
