Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) (http://picrust.github.io/picrust/tutorials/genome_prediction.html) program based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database was used to predict the functional alteration of microbiota in different samples. The OTU data obtained were used to generate BIOM files formatted as input for PICRUSt v1.1.09 with the make.biom script usable in the Mothur. OTU abundances were mapped to Greengenes OTU IDs as input to speculate about the functional alteration of microbiota (Supplementary Tables S1–S3).
