Cell viability was determined by CellTiter-Glo Luminescent Cell Viability Assay from Promega (Madison, WI, USA) as described.44, 45 Apoptosis was analyzed using the Annexin V Apoptosis Kit (Calbiochem, Gibbstown, NJ, USA). Briefly, cells were harvested and re-suspended at a concentration of 1.0 × 106 cells per ml and stained with FITC-labeled annexin V and propidium iodide as described.17, 46
