Heparin whole-blood samples (500 μL) were either kept on ice or incubated with PBS or 10−6 M bacterial peptide formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenyl-alanine (fMLP) (Sigma Chemical Co., St Louis, MO) for 5 min. Samples were stained with PE-anti-human CD11b (clone 2LPM19c, Dakopatts, Glostrup, Denmark) and APC-anti-human CD62L (clone DREG-56, BD Biosciences) as previously reported [22]. Samples were then analyzed by means of flow cytometry, as described in the Additional file 1: Methods.
