Simvastatin (Enzo Life Sciences International) was activated by alkaline lysis according to the manufacturer’s protocol, and added to the drinking water such that mice received ∼40 mg/kg of body weight/day, a dose similar to or lower than that used in previous studies looking at central effects of SV [14, 15, 20]. SV was administered at 20 mg/kg/day for 3 days, increased to 30 mg/kg/day for 4 days, and then to 40 mg/kg/day for the remainder of the treatment [15]. Controls received the same drinking solution without SV.
