Performance of the trained model for prediction on new images was evaluated using a separate dataset (Table (Table1)1) including a total of 9 light microscopic cross-sectional images of healthy and regenerating rat nerves. Image pixel size was 0.1 µm. In each image, a region of interest (1008 × 1008 pixels = 1 016 064 pixels) was randomly selected and analyzed using automated segmentation in AxonDeepSeg, manual segmentation, and manual straight-line measurements to enable comparison between the three methods. Cropped nerve fibers at the edges of the ROIs, were excluded from the analysis.
