Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were measured by the enzymatic kinetic method (cat. nos. C009-3 -1 and C010-3-1; Nanjing Jiancheng Bioengineering Institute) using an automatic biochemical analyser (UA2700; Olympus Corporation) according to the manufacturer's protocol.

Liver lipoperoxide levels were estimated by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) levels using the OxiSelect™ thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) Assay kit (MDA Quantitation) (cat. no. DTBA-100; BioAssay Systems) according to the manufacturer's protocol.
