Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used for determining the concentrations of free carnitine and acetylcarnitine in plasma, liver and different skeletal muscles according to [25]. Deuterated L-carnitine-methyl-d3-hydrochloride and deuterated O-acetyl-d3-carnitine-hydrochloride (both from Sigma-Aldrich, Steinheim, Germany) were used as internal standards.
