In the formalin test, the injection of a dilute solution of formalin (1%, 20 μL/paw) into the dorsal surface of the mouse hind paw evoked biphasic nociceptive behavioral responses, such as licking, biting the injected paw, or both, occurring from 0 to 10 min after formalin injection (the early phase) and a prolonged phase, occurring from 10 to 40 min (the late phase). Before the test, mice were individually placed in a Plexiglas observation cage (30 × 14 × 12 cm) for one hour, to acclimatize to the testing environment. The total time the animal spent licking or biting its paw during the early and late phase of formalin-induced nociception was recorded.
