We defined ED visits as any ED visit for which a health care provider recorded a history and physical note, regardless of the child’s disposition. The team defined hospitalizations as any inpatient or observation hospital stay with a discharge summary. All patients’ ED and hospital visits were included during the study time frame. Visits likely related to device complications were identified using a method previously described.1 Three reviewers (a trained research assistant and two physician reviewers, each with over 10 years of complex care experience) established high interrater reliability (Kappa = 0.92).
