Soil DNA was extracted using a FastDNA SPIN kit (MP Biomedicals, Santa Ana, CA) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Archaeal 16S rRNA genes were amplified using the primer pair 524F-10-ext (5′-TGYCAGCCGCCGCGGTAA-3′) and Arch958-modR (5′-YCCGGCGTTGAVTCCAATT-3′) (75). High-throughput sequencing was performed on the MiSeq PE300 platform (Illumina, Inc., San Diego, CA).
