LDH assay was performed using the LDH Cytotoxicity Assay Kit (Enzo Life Sciences, Lausen, Switzerland) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The medium from the treated conditions, high control (maximum LDH release by applying the lysis buffer) and negative control wells were transferred to a flat-bottom 96-well microplate. Then, the working solution from the LDH kit was added and after the incubation period, the reaction was terminated by the stop solution. Absorbance (A) was measured at 490 nm in a microplate reader Multiskan GO (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltman, MA, USA). The results were expressed as percentage of cytotoxicity based on the LDH release—mean of five independent experiments performed in triplicate—and calculated using the following equation:
