Cell apoptosis was assessed using TUNEL assay according to the manufacturers' instructions. The sections of heart tissue were cut into 6 µm slices and then dewaxed. After xylene dewaxing and ethanol dehydration, the cardiac tissue sections were incubated with 20 µg/ml proteinase K for 20 min and fluorescein-labelled dUTP for 1 h at 37˚C. Fluorescence microscopy (x200 magnification; Olympus Corporation) was used to analyze ≥100 myocardial cells in each group. Image-Pro Plus 6.0 (Media Cybernetics, Inc.) was used to calculate the results.
