Figure 1 illustrates the course of the study in form of a CONSORT flow chart. This includes an evaluation of 108 patients to verify clinically the existence of a lateral epicondylitis by medical history as well as performing significant clinical tests (pain on palpation of the lateral epicondyle, painful extension of fingers against resistance). Seventy-one patients with lateral epicondylitis were subsequently randomised by lottery into two groups. The lottery has taken place by drawing an opaque lot with the designation ‘Group A’ or ‘Group B’. The patients’ characteristics of both groups are shown in an overview in Tables 1 and and22.
