The total antioxidant capacity was determined using the trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) assay. Lung homogenates were deproteinized by incubating samples in 5% trichloric acid for 5 min on ice, followed by centrifugation at 15,000 rpm for 5 min. To assess the antioxidant capacity, supernatants were incubated with a radical solution, containing 5 mM 2,2 azino-bis-3 ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (Sigma-Aldrich), 20 µM H2O2, and 20 mU/mL horseradish peroxidase (Sigma-Aldrich) at 37 °C for 5 min, and the absorbance was measured at 734 nm. TEAC was calculated by normalizing the absorbances to an antioxidant capacity of 1 µM Trolox, and was further normalized to the starting amount of lung tissue.
