All protocol articles derived from an eLife research article have been published under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license.

In March 2023, Bio-protocol became a fully open access journal with the introduction of an Article Processing Charge (APC). All articles submitted on or after March 1, 2023 and published by Bio-protocol are immediately available worldwide under one of the two Creative Commons licenses described below. All articles submitted before March 1, 2023, except for protocols derived from eLife research articles as described above, are freely accessible under an exclusive license to Bio-protocol.

Open access publication is supported by the Article Processing Charges (APCs). Waivers are available for authors who cannot afford the publication charges.

Licenses

Bio-protocol asks our authors to sign a License to Publish agreement that allows us to publish the article in Bio-protocol and any other Bio-protocol products and to sublicense such rights and exploit all subsidiary rights. As Bio-protocol is an open access journal, our authors can choose one of the following two Creative Commons licenses.

• Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC BY): This license permits users to distribute and use the article in any format and for any purpose, including commercial purposes, and to alter and extract data from the article, provided that the original author(s) and source are credited.
• Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 License International Public License (CC BY-NC): This license permits users to distribute and use the article, in any format, but only for non-commercial purposes, provided that the original author(s) and source are credited. It does not permit the article to be used and changed commercially. Commercial reuse requires permission as described in the section of “Permission for non-authors” below.

Authors should choose the one that complies with their funding agency requirements.

If authors are free to choose either license, please note that most protocol articles contain commercial products such as lab reagents and equipment; the CC BY-NC license gives authors some control over how their article might be published or re-used and could help prevent the contents from being misused commercially.

Permissions

All articles published by Bio-protocol journal are made immediately available worldwide under an open access license (CC BY or CC BY-NC).

Immediately after publication, authors are permitted to post the published version of their Bio-protocol articles in either their institutional repository or any other repository of their choice.

For Bio-protocol articles that are distributed under the terms of CC BY 4.0, users can freely use those contents for any purposes including commercial purposes provided that the original author(s) and source are credited.

For Bio-protocol articles that are distributed under the terms of CC BY-NC, users can freely use those contents only for non-commercial purposes. For commercial purposes, please complete this form and submit it via email at permission@bio-protocol.org. All requests are reviewed and answered via email, usually within one to two weeks after the submission of your request.

To include copyrighted works in your Bio-protocol manuscript, you must check with the copyright owner to obtain permission for its use if required and appropriately credit the source in your manuscript.
