Methods for in vitro evaluation of antimicrobial activity, seek to assess the total number of E. coli cells in culture media [39]. Colony-forming units (CFU) of E. coli DH5α were counted after plating triplicate serial dilutions of LB cultures on LB-Agar plates and incubating overnight at 37 °C. Plates containing between 2 and 200 individually identifiable colonies were counted. The relative number of colonies on a plate compared to the control gives a value which is a measurement of the toxicity.
