Intestines and livers collected from 15 different fish specimens from dietary group (n = 3) were randomly collected and processed according to Cutrignelli et al. (2018)56. For details, please see Supplementary Information section. Moreover, to ascertain the degree of fat accumulation in liver, a quantitative analysis was performed on a significant number of histological sections from each experimental group in triplicate (n = 9). Not evaluable areas such as blood vessels were not considered. The percentage of fat fraction (PFF) was calculated by mean of the ImageJ software setting a homogeneous threshold value.
