As part of a battery of baseline psychometric assessments [27], all participants were administered cognitive subtests that measured PFC-dependent working memory (Letter-Number Sequencing [LNS] and Arithmetic from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition [WAIS-III]) [29] and tests of language abilities (letter fluency from the Controlled Oral Word Association Test [COWAT] [30] and WAIS-III Similarities). Assessments were made by a psychologist or psychometrician trained in administration and scoring. The 2 working memory test scores were converted to z-scores and summed, and the 2 language test scores were converted to z-scores and summed, to provide separate overall scores for working memory and language respectively. Symptom severity was assessed in patients at baseline using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) [31].
