Total phenolic compounds (TPC) and total flavonoid (TF) contents were measured in the same 80% methanol extracts used for TSS and MDA quantification. TPC were determined as previously described [91] by reaction of the extracts with NaHCO3 and the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The reaction mixtures were kept in the dark, at room temperature, for 90 min, and the absorbance was then measured at 765 nm. TPC concentration was expressed as equivalents of the gallic acid standard (mg eq. GA g−1 DW).

TF were determined by reaction with AlCl3 under alkaline conditions after nitration of catechol groups with NaNO2 [92]. The absorbance of the samples was read at 510 nm. Catechin was used as a standard to plot a calibration curve, and the results were expressed as catechin equivalents (mg eq. C g−1 DW).
