February 2009 (hg19, GRCh37) and December 2013 (hg38, GRCh38) assemblies of the human genome were downloaded from Genome Reference Consortium97. These assemblies were used with GENCODE transcript annotations v19 and v33, respectively98. Only genes labeled “protein coding” were analyzed. Transcript annotations were parsed by custom scripts to extract the coordinates of exons and introns. The results for GRCh37 assembly are reported throughout the paper; however, Genome Browser track hubs (see below) contain tracks for both GRCh37 and GRCh38 assemblies.
