The study was conducted in three mountainous communes in Dong Xuan District, located in the south-central coastal province of Phu Yen (Fig 1). The selected communes of Phu Mo, Xuan Lanh, and Xuan Quang 1 represent the three highest malaria-burden communes of Dong Xuan district. This study site was purposefully selected by NIMPE due to its epidemiological characteristics including the relatively high burden of malaria cases, a high number of forest-fringe communities, and large proportions of the local population that frequently travel to and sleep in the forest and/or on farms for their livelihood [24].
