We conducted a retrospective, matched case-control study in pediatric patients who developed SSIs following cardiac surgery between January 2010 and December 2015. All patients aged ≤14 years who had undergone cardiac surgery at our tertiary care hospital were reviewed. The CDC diagnostic criteria were used to identify cases of SSIs. In Saudi Arabia, the regulations regarding pediatric medicine considers the pediatric age group to be 0–14 years. Therefore, patients aged>14 years old did not match the CDC criteria and were excluded. Those who developed SSIs due to a non-cardiac surgery cause were also excluded. This study was approved by our Institutional Review Board [Protocol No. SP17/139/R].
