Tumor tissue sections were routinely dewaxed, rehydrated and tested according to the TUNEL assay conforming to the manufacturer’s instructions (Roche Diagnostics, Co., Ltd., Rotkreuz, Switzerland). Briefly, sections were first incubated in a TdT reaction cocktail for 45 min at 37°C, followed by treatment with a Click-iT reaction cocktail. Hematoxylin was applied for nuclei staining.
