The pattern of the roster for registrars during the study period included being in house for 13-hour day (08:00–21:00) and 12-hour night (20:30–08:30) shifts (Fig 1). The expected working hours were 80 hours per fortnight excluding the on calls. This roster resulted in three to four consecutive day or night shifts. The rest period between consecutive shifts was a minimum of one and a maximum of seven days.
