For all included full text articles, using a customised spreadsheet, one reviewer (SAB) extracted detailed information about the study characteristics and key findings (including author name, publication year, study country, study design, setting (e.g. pharmacy or drug store/shop or drug vendor), type of dispensers and key findings (number of pharmacy encounters, number of visits resulted in dispensing of antibiotics without valid prescription, types of antibiotics dispensed, types of disease/symptom presented and for which antibiotics were sought). A second reviewer (LH) checked the extracted data and no discrepancies were found. Definition of terms in the review are included in Additional file 2.
