Mouse breeding and experimental procedures were approved by the Berlin state authority Landesamt für Gesundheit und Soziales. Mice were bred at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, housed under specific pathogen–free conditions on a 12-hour light/dark cycle, and fed ad libitum. For the experiments, male mice of 8 to 10 weeks of age were used.
