Two-tailed Student’s t tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Bonferroni post tests were used as appropriate. Changes in fEPSP slope before and during drug add (peak effect) were compared using a paired t test. For all statistical comparisons, the critical P value was considered to be 0.05. The numbers of animals to be used for each experiment outlined within the study were determined using a power calculation statistical analysis using the Power and Sample Size Calculation software program available at Vanderbilt University (Dupont and Plummer, PS Controlled Clinical Trials. 18:274 1997). Animal numbers are based on a power calculation using SEs from published studies and previous experience to detect >20% difference for each outlined experiment with an 80% power (α = 0.05, power = 80%, δ = 0.2, σ = 0.18).
