Comparison of mean values between two groups was assessed by both Student’s t test (parametric) and Mann-Whitney test (nonparametric). Comparisons of mean values between three or more groups were assessed by both one-way ANOVA with Tukey post hoc tests (parametric) and Kruskal-Wallis with Mann-Whitney post hoc tests (nonparametric). Differences were considered statistically significant when indicated by both parametric and nonparametric approaches; the larger of the two P values are presented throughout. Statistical significance in figures is denoted as *P < 0.05 and **P < 0.01.
