Eight-week-old male C57BL/6Ncrl mice, obtained from Charles River Laboratories, were housed under standard conditions of constant temperature (22 ± 1°C), humidity (relative, 30%), and a 12-hour light/dark cycle. After acclimating for 3 days, mice were gavaged with Mn (15 mg/kg) for 30 days and then euthanized. This Mn dose regimen was chosen on the basis of previous studies in humans and animals (9496). Use of the animals and protocol procedures were approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at Iowa State University (Ames, IA, USA).
