To estimate the growth rate of spheroids, we used the Gompertz model, an empirical relationship for tumor growth lnV/V0=lnVmaxV0[1exp(αt)], where V is a measure of spheroid size, V0 is the initial size, and Vmax is the final size. The growth rate is interpreted as parameter α. Spheroid growth curves were replotted as f(V)=ln[1ln(VV0)/ln(VmaxV0)] versus time, and the single linear fit of the curves was used to calculate the values of parameter α, the growth rate. The growth rate was then reported as the absolute value of α.
