All experiments were conducted on microcolony samples derived from S. pistillata colonies maintained at the Centre Scientifique de Monaco. Microcolonies were grown laterally on glass coverslips by the lateral skeleton preparative assay (8, 25, 42). During experiments, samples were kept at a temperature of 25°C, a salinity of 38, and light intensities of approximately 200 and 0 μmol photons m−2 s−1 during light/dark manipulations (see below).
