STM measurements were conducted in an ultrahigh vacuum (p < 3 × 10−9 Pa) environment and at a temperature T = 0.35 K. The tunneling current I was measured using tungsten tips or Cr-coated tips. Tunneling parameters for topography, if not noted otherwise, were Vb = 300 mV and Isp = 200 pA. The dI/dV spectra were acquired by a lock-in technique applying a modulation voltage of typically Vmod = 0.3 mV; if enhanced resolution was strived for, Vmod was reduced to 0.05 mV. The bias voltage Vb is applied to the sample. A magnetic field of up to 12 T can be applied perpendicular to the scanned sample surface.
