Morphological changes of N. oceanica cells and oil bodies were observed under a laser confocal microscope, as described previously with slight modifications (17). Briefly, 300 μl of culture was added with 75 μl of glycerol (0.5 g/ml) and 3.75 μl of Nile red (0.3 μg/ml, in acetone; Sigma-Aldrich, USA) and lucifugally incubated for 5 min at room temperature. Stained cells were observed under a laser scanning microscope LSM 510 META (Zeiss, Germany), with excitation and emission wavelength of 525 and 550 to 575 nm, respectively.
