Unsupported catalysts were prepared by stirring Co(OAc)2·4H2O (1.00 g, 4.01 mmol, 1.0 equiv.) and chitosan (1.29 g, 8.03 mmol, 2.0 equiv.) in 80 ml of ethanol at 65°C for 18 hours. Afterward, the solvent was removed at the rotary evaporator and the residue was dried overnight at 65°C by applying high vacuum. The dried sample was ground in an agate mortar, pyrolized at temperatures between 700° and 1000°C, and ground again in an agate mortar. The catalysts were stored in glass vials in air without special protection. The catalysts were labeled as Co@Chitosan-temperature (for example, Co@Chitosan-700).
