E. gracilis NIES-48 was provided by the Microbial Culture Collection at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES; Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan). The cultures were grown in culture flasks (working volume, 20 ml) under 14-hour light/10-hour dark cycle illumination (120 to 140 μmol m−2 s−1) at 25°C. A stock culture of E. gracilis cells was grown in AF-6 medium (30, 31) for 5 days prior to the measurement.
