Human primary islets were purchased from Prodo Laboratories Inc., providing islets isolated from donor pancreas obtained from deceased individuals with research consent from organ procurement organizations. The use and storage of human islets were performed in compliance with the Declaration of Helsinki, International Conference on Harmonisation/Good Clinical Practice, and AstraZeneca code of conduct. The human islets were maintained in tissue culture in PIM(S) Complete (Prodo Laboratories Inc.) before use.
