About Us
Created in 2011 by a group of Stanford scientists, Bio-protocol is an online peer-reviewed protocol journal. Its mission is to make life science research more efficient and reproducible by curating and hosting high quality, free access protocols.

Our vision - improving reproducibility

Sharing detailed methods and fostering direct communication among scientists will improve reproducibility and greatly accelerate discoveries in life science research.

Who we are - passionate early-career researchers

Bio-protocol is a grassroots journal whose editorial and review boards are primarily postdocs and junior faculty members. As early-career life-science researchers, who actively and routinely design, conduct and supervise experiments, we have the broad expertise to ensure the quality and clarity of the published protocols.

What we publish - peer-reviewed, validated, and updatable protocols

Bio-protocol publishes both basic and advanced, and both classic and novel protocols validated by their use in a published research article. To limit redundancy, Bio-protocol does not publish protocols detailed in other protocol journals.

Bio-protocol is updatable – authors may submit updated versions. Readers are encouraged to post their reproducibility feedback via "Share your feedback". Extensive modifications to existing bio-protocols can also be published as adapted versions and will be linked to the original protocol.

Free to the research community –
no publication or access fees

Bio-protocol is by researchers and for researchers. It does not charge any fees from the research community – no publishing fee; no access fee. Since its founding, Bio-protocol has been financially supported by its passionate founders.

The revenues from advertising via www.bio-thing.com, Bio-protocol's sister website, will eventually provide the revenue to support Bio-protocol.

Where we are going - revolutionizing the way researchers communicate

Bio-protocol is not just "another" protocol journal. At Bio-protocol, we hope that, by providing a free and efficient platform for publishing and discussing highly detailed research protocols, we will facilitate communication between researchers, and improve the rigor and reproducibility of life science research.
